Artist's Statement
There is no greater joy for me than to spend time in my studio giving form to the countless images, ideas, and visions that traverse my mind. Inspiration comes from a myriad of places, a scrap of paper seen out of the corner of my eye, a negative space between tree branches, historical art sources, and contemporary tragedy in the form of tsunamis, wars, and personal challenges.
Birds in particular seem to have found their way into my work. The variety of markings, postures, behaviors, and communications infiltrate my waking and sleeping consciousness. They are storytellers without meaning to be. Whenever I stray from them to try my hand at other subjects, a tussle ensues, and soon they are back on my papyrus, canvas, fabric, tile, or woodblock. I bend to their insistent demand for recognition.
Ceramics are a fairly new venture for me. I paint and glaze on low-fire, preformed, earthenware bisque. Occasionally, I make my own pieces from the ground up. Working in three dimensions stretches me from my usual two-dimensional path.
